The Newe Forte

Located in the Fort Raleigh National Historic Site is this plaque, which marks the location of the "New Forte in Verginia." The fort was built in 1585 to protect against Spanish invasion. As is taught in elementary-school history classes, the colony on Roanoke Island mysteriously disappeared, leaving only the word CROATOAN carved on a post.
