Iwo Jima Memorial

Sunday, February 29: The Iwo Jima Memorial--officially the U.S. Marine Corps Memorial-- is located in Arlington near the Netherlands Carillon. The monument depicts the raising of the flag over the island of Iwo Jima in World War II after a particularly difficult battle. The inscription at the base reads "In honor and memory of the men of the United States Marine Corps who have given their lives to their country since 10 November 1775."

On February 29, 2004, I took a walking tour of many of the monuments and buildings in Washington, DC, and Arlington, Virginia. The walk started at 10:30 a.m. and ended at about 3:30 p.m., covering several miles of urban territory and including visits to several national monuments.
