Valley of Fires

Monday, September 26, 2005: Only a few miles west of Carrizozo on Highway 380 is the Valley of Fires Recreational Area. A lava flow from an eruption 5,000 years ago created this unique area, which has a desert climate and black outcrops of lava. At the top of this picture is the picnic area and campground.
