Sculpture
Monday, September 26, 2005: This is the sculpture in front of the main building
at the VLA. The VLA is made up of 27 telescopes arranged in a 'Y' pattern, which is represented
by this sculpture. I was surprised to learn that the telescopes are on railroad tracks and can
be spread out so that each of the arms is 13 miles long. Inside the visitor center, there was a
map of Washington, DC, with the array at its maximum size superimposed over it--and the arms were
much larger than the city and reached well beyond the suburbs of Arlington and Bethesda.
