Fort Moultrie

Fort Sumter National Monument (Fort Moultrie Unit), South Carolina; Friday, April 30, 2010:  On my way in to Charleston, I stopped at Fort Moultrie on Sullivan's Island. Fort Moultrie is the place where South Carolina successfully held off the British during the early years of the Revolution. It's also where some of South Carolina's fondness for the palmetto comes from; the first fort built here was made out of palmetto logs, and the logs absorbed the impact of cannon fire and helped the colonists keep out the British. The section of the fort in this picture is from the early 20th century.
