Kennedy's Plane
On February 26, 1999, I rented a car and drove to Dayton, Ohio, which
is a bit more than an hour from Columbus. My purpose? I wanted to visit
the Air Force Museum at Wright-Patterson Field. The museum itself is
excellent, featuring historic planes from World War I onward and providing a
great glimpse into the history of the youngest of America's armed
services, from its inception as the Army Air Force to the present.
The picture above was actually taken inside one of the hangers on the
base at Wright-Patterson. At the museum, you can request a base pass, and
inside this hanger you can see several historic airplanes. This is a picture
of the tail of Air Force One. This particular plane was in use all the way
through the George Bush years in the early 1990s. It was also the plane which
carried Kennedy back from Dallas in 1963. Visitors can actually go into the
plane and see the seats that were removed to accommodate Kennedy's casket.
