Mahogany

Monday, April 26: Elevation is everything in the Everglades. On the main road from the entrance near Florida City, there's actually a sign saying that the "pass" is only three feet above sea level. Elevation in the Everglades also determines the plant communities that develop in a particular area. This Mahogany Hammock area is only a few feet above the surrounding land, but has a very different collection of plant and animal life from the lower, swampy areas of the Everglades.
