Woodpecker

September 12, 2007; Big Bay State Park, Madeline Island, Wisconsin: Located within Big Bay State Park is the Big Bay Sand Spit and Bog State Natural Area, which has a boardwalk that provides an easy walking surface through the relatively fragile dune area separating Lake Superior from Big Bay Lagoon. One of my "companions" on the trail was this pileated woodpecker, who stayed with me for quite a while as I walked along the boardwalk. Eventually he got confused when a family approaching from the other direction made him veer off at a tangent to the trail, not to be seen again.
