Westminster Abbey

London; Monday, June 26, 2006: I took a tour of Westminster Abbey through an outfit called London Walks, and it definitely gave me some perspective on the various historical information surrounding the building and its contents. With the tour, we entered directly into the cloisters, which is about the only place you're allowed to take a picture. (It is, after all, a working church, and only tolerates the tourists because it costs £10.00 to visit.) This is a picture of a memorial to Edmund Halley that's in the cloisters. Famous people buried in the Abbey itself include William Shakespeare, Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin, and Charles Dickens.

factoid

The flag of the United Kingdom is comprised of a blue field with the red cross of Saint George (patron saint of England) edged in white superimposed on the diagonal red cross of Saint Patrick (patron saint of Ireland), which is superimposed on the diagonal white cross of Saint Andrew (patron saint of Scotland). It is properly known as the Union Flag, but commonly called the Union Jack.
